Fantasy islands: We asked visitors to our online Project Gallery to submit kitchen islands "that stand out as beacons of artistic expression, " and we were rewarded with a variety of inspired creations. And though it wasn't easy, we did select one winner and three runners-up.

When renovating their antique home, the owners requested that the new space include a "place of honor" for a piece of slate rescued from the waters off Rhode Island. the design team rose to the challenge, and the slate became the island's dining counter. Cherry cabinets house the sink, dishwasher, and recycling and trash bins, and provide plenty of room for storage. Serving pieces and cookbooks are stored in the bookcase adjacent to the dining counter. The granite countertop provides space for prep, serving and cleanup.
